Red River Wildlife Management Area is a diverse habitat in northern New Mexico, offering excellent opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, and hiking along the scenic Red River corridor.
The Red River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico, spanning valley and mountainous terrain along the Red River. Managed by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, this area provides critical habitat for a variety of wildlife species including mule deer, elk, black bear, and numerous bird species. The area's riparian zones along the Red River itself support healthy trout populations, making it a popular spot for anglers. The varied ecosystem ranges from dense conifer forests to open meadows and river wetlands that contribute to habitat diversity. The Red River WMA borders the Carson National Forest, allowing visitors to easily combine trips between the two protected areas. Recreational opportunities include trout fishing, birdwatching, hiking, wildlife photography, and seasonal hunting in accordance with state regulations. In winter, the nearby Red River Ski & Summer Area presents opportunities for snow sports and sightseeing. The WMA is known for its relatively accessible network of trails and its natural beauty, characterized by mountain vistas and the flowing waters of the Red River. Visitors are drawn by the peaceful environment and the chance to experience northern New Mexico’s high-altitude ecosystems. The area also plays a key role in conservation efforts aimed at protecting native wildlife and sustaining habitat connectivity in the Sangre de Cristo range.
